If your dog is responding quickly and joyfully to every "here!" after a few weeks of practice in your house, you can try recalls in your backyard. Switch to a new, high-value treat when you move from indoors to outdoors, because you're now competing with distractions much more interesting than the contents of your home. If you've been using hot dogs, try cheese. Apartment dwellers without yards can practice recalls in the hallway during off-hours. The city dogs I work with seem to love racing down the hall-plus, it's good practice for if your dog ever slips out your front door. If hallway recalls aren't an option, look for a neighborhood fenced tennis court with flexible pet rules (or if you're like me, pretend you didn't see the NO PETS ALLOWED sign!). You and your helper should stand about twelve feet apart when you start working on outdoor recalls, and then as your dog gets more confident with the exercise, move farther apart. If you have a wooded lot, hide behind trees and have her try to find you when you say "here." To keep it fun, move to a new spot each time she discovers your hiding spot.
